Those all-inclusive hotels in Cuba …extremely convenient after 4 months of insane studying, extremely anti-charming after 2 days. As the girls and I decided we needed some change from sharing the pool edge with a variety of international whales, we took the bus to Havana.
I’m not really savvy with a hammer and stuff, so I was very inspired by the Cuban way of restoring: old and sad building? – We are painting it! Imagine a (cool) color mayhem. Havana is no exception with colorful buildings and old cars everywhere. But the time is standing still on Cuba, which on one hand makes out the amazing Cuban charm. On the other hand this is also what lies over the Cuban people as a curse.
I got in contact with Luis on couchsurfing before we even booked our fancy all-inclusive tickets. So cool: even though there is hardly internet on the Ireland couchsurfing is taking place – In a limited way that is, as couchsurfing to its full extent is illegal. So Luis arranged a homestay for us, which I can recommend if you’re looking for cheap and personal.
Luis was kind of quick figuring out my girls after we had been chillaxing all day in hot Havana. He brought us to his favorite bar. All I need to say here is that the Mojitos costed less than freaking half a dollar!! So we decided to meet Luis and his friends later who took us to the water front – a popular place for people to hang at night. With the rum still working the guys decided that it was time to teach us girls salsa. So with music from an iPhone we were thrown around in the air – literally.
Did I mention that Canadians are very savvy at grinding on the dance floor? The Cubans are a bit more classy: reggaeton, hehe.
The next day Susie and Emilie went back to the whales, while Marie-Louise and I went on another Havana chillaxed adventure with Luis and Mike – Two cool guys with great educations (engineering and law). It’s free for Cubans to get an education, but the feeling of being in a prison really comes to the surface when there are no jobs to get and it’s impossible to get out of the country. So here we had a great time with these two bright and amazing guys, who were well-qualified, 28 years old, but living home with their moms. What do you do? Well, the first thing I did was to send Luis a package …with Nutella and Sneakers. It’s freaking tragi-comic. But we love these guys!
Here’s a little visual something from Cuba
